Theater of the Roof, the Arch, and the Octagon

at Officina Stamperia Del Notaio, Tusa, Italy

2023

Site-specific installation created as an Artist-in-Residence at Officina Stamperia Del Notaio in Tusa, Italy.  The theater was created for a public performance to activate a piazza and bring the town and artists together for an evening of music, art, and celebration.

Lights, video, and set pieces fabricated from salvaged cardboard boxes presented a bright and animated centerpiece for the event.

Site-Specific Instalation

Stairs as Thrust Stage

The medieval mountain town of Tusa Montagna on the north coast of Sicily offered countless locations for an inspired installation. After exploring the labyrinth of passages and nearly hidden piazzas, a set of semicircular stairs on via Largo Notarile was selected for creating a stage to activated the public realm.

Performance

Light

Light, video projection, and color were utilized to animate the stage and offer a counterpoint to the monochromatic warm glow of Tusa’s low-pressure sodium street lights.

Process

To create stage elements, salvaged cardboard boxes were cut, painted, and adorned with prints inspired by historic Sicilian tile designs. Tile motifs that are generally experienced indoors, were transferred to an exterior public space.
